Exciting moments of
SPI events
Due to prior
commitments, we were unable to join in for the Spooky night
walk at Bulim Hill. The legend of this Bulim Hill will be
featured on another report. However, we were present for the
other three events, and enjoyed each of them (but not to say
that all were clear sailing, each event had its share of messes)
thanks to the SPI team spirit.
We did not know what to expect of night walk outings with
SPI (this was our second attendance at an SPI organised event,
the first being the Thai amulets seminar in June 2008). Both
of us, being introverted, were expecting to be keeping to
ourselves. Thanks go to Uncle Chua who remembered us from
the Thai amulet talk for making us feel warmly welcomed (my
hand was numb after his greeting on the 16th, and his later
parting handshake). The second member of the team who made
our first and subsequent SPI outings memorable was Angela,
a.k.a Princess Delfi, someone whom I had met years ago (and
she still remembered me, thou I must admit I needed some prompting).
The easy way SPI members interacted with each other and participants
would make anyone comfortable. The co-operation between members
for the "smooth" flow of the tour and the safety of participants
was exemplary over the three activities. In addition, the
generous sharing of knowledge definitely encourages one to
delve deeper in the area.
Hungry Ghost Tour, 16th August
This Tour covered a few cemeteries each of which has a rich
heritage in Singapore, namely the well known Bukit Brown Cemetery,
and Choa Chu Kang Chinese and Muslim cemeteries. As we journeyed
from the meeting point of Lavender MRT station to Bukit Brown
Cemetery, the guide for our coach, Brushup, gave a summary
of the history of the place we were going to visit, along
with the proposed itinerary for the walk. On arriving at Bukit
Brown, we joined up with the first bus where Desmond resumed
the role of guide. We trekked through passing many graves
and shrines, then climbed a hill to view the site of the graves
of Ong Sam Leong and family, reputed to be the largest gravesite
in Singapore. After viewing the largest tomb, we returned
to our coaches which took us to the Choa Chu Kang Chinese
cemetery.

of the tomb

Spirit tree, said to
be strong with negative energy; a strange solitary tomb in
CCK cemetery
At the gate of
the cemetery we were greeted with the smell of burned paper,
offerings, and incense. There was a prayer group (sorry, I
do not know the correct term here) that was leaving as we
arrived who cautioned us that there were many ghosts/spirits
within, almost challenging us to proceed. Desmond led us through
the cemetery, pointing out the different structures of the
tombs - rounded vs. square shaped tombs. He also pointed out
the big tree where the negative energies were strongest. The
atmosphere of the cemetery was gloomy - in spite of being
atop a hill, there seemed to be a dead feeling hanging over
the place.
After viewing this tree, taking in the atmosphere, we proceeded
to another site where there were many "baby tombs", burial
ground for the "wandering spirits". The graves were marked
not by lavish structures as the previous tombs observed, but
by small tablets. These came about whereby upon exhumation
of previous graves, the unclaimed remains would be re-buried
within this plot, each urn being marked by a simple small
marker - hence "baby". There was, within this area, a distinct
tomb which was the focal point of this walk. A little further
in from the tombs for the wandering spirits was the columbarium
for ashes, many of the niches being empty, awaiting habitants.
The tour rounded up with a walk through the Muslim cemetery
in Choa Chu Kang. This allowed us to appreciate the difference
between Chinese cemeteries and Muslim cemeteries, where the
structure of the tomb and the actual decoration of the tombs
were clearly visible. This cemetery seemed darker (not just
because the trees were making it dark) than the openness of
the Chinese cemetery. Due to time constraints, however, our
walk through the Muslim cemetery was fast, with little time
for sharing from the organisers.
Seminar on Hungry Ghosts and Ritual Experiments, 23rd August
We were a couple of hours late for the Ritual experiments
night held at Camp Christine, hence missed the SPI agents'
sharing session. After a quick dinner, we settled to listen
to the sharing by Mr Tony Kern, director of the movie/documentary
"The Month of Hungry Ghosts". Together with SPI founder Kenny,
Tony regaled us with accounts of things that occurred during
the filming and editing process. We were even allowed to watch
some clips from the movie (by courtesy of Tony).
The programme for the rest of the evening was to conduct three
experiments, and weather permitting, take a few spooky night
walks. The first was ritual experiment of Journey to Hell
to Meet the Good Brothers to be conducted by Master Wilson.
Before we left to an open site to conduct this, Master Wilson
first briefed us all within the camp confines. Once all queries
were answered, we gathered the necessary items and walked
out to the location chosen for the ritual. Due to the size
of the group, Master Wilson suggested that he conduct the
experiment in three rounds, thus enabling everyone who wanted
to attempt to visit the other realm an opportunity to try.

1. SPI members making
preparation; 2. Master Wilson guiding Kelvin to recite some
chants; 3 & 4. The fire ring taking shape.
Perhaps the members are kicking up the sand - there is an
orb that resembles a face of some beast or Chucky (??). View
here.

1. Master Wilson before
the ritual started, gave offering to the Earth Deity - a lot
of orbs appeared (may be they just kicked up the sand)
2. You can see that the orbs became larger when the offering
proceeded and chanted by Master Wilson
3. On the other side, participants were waiting for Master
Wilson to finish the ritual with the Earth Deity
4. Strange thing happened, in the next photo a very dark apparition
arose, as if just blocking in front of the camera - what is
that dark shadow??

1. As you can see,
more and bigger orbs appeared when the ritual was about to
start
2. In this photo, Master Wilson started saying some chants
.. amazingly a series of 'orbs' concentrated above Master
and the assistants positions
3. Participants took a seat properly awaiting for the Journey-to-hell
ritual to start
4. Master Wilson is infusing the tailsmans into a bowl of
water

1. The journey to hell
is pronounced begun; 2. Participants blindfolded with a red
cloth embedded with a talisman; 3 & 4. Observer team recording
SPI agents tended
to setting the protective circle for the participants while
Master Wilson tutored Kelvin on the chant he wanted Kelvin
to perform; together they also made the necessary offerings
to any spirits around the area. Once all preparations were
performed satisfactorily, the first group of ten participants
settled themselves on their mats (more for comfort than any
ritualistic purpose) and awaited their preparation. Protection
of participants was attained through the consumption of a
special "talisman cocktail" where each participant was to
take a sip of water with talisman previously infused by Master
Wilson, and the protective circle of light around them.
After settling down with some rounds of chanting, approximately
four participants in the first group were able to tour the
other realm, much to the delight of Master Wilson. After a
short break, the second group of participants attempted to
enter the other realm; sadly none were able to view the land.
The third group was more fortunate, with about half the participants
being able to visit the other side.
After the rituals, each person was invited to talk about their
experiences. From the various accounts, the range of experiences
was varied.
At the end, the light drizzle became rain, thus forcing us
to abandon our location. Undaunted by this temporary setback,
we proceeded back to the base. Some rituals were said to be
able to invite rain. Would this be one of them which brought
rain?

1. A spooky face was
observed; It doesn't quite look like a human face; 2. Is it
just the dog as appeared in the second photo?
3 & 4. Master burning offering to attract ghosts come
and "taste" the muffins

SPI members trying
to observe and capture anomalies

Do you see anything
unusual?
We observed that soon after the offering was made, a flash
tide arose .. as if by the water it reaches the offering at
full speed
A little after
midnight, the participants who were staying overnight gathered
materials and headed out to the waters' edge to make offerings
to spirits. It was a re-enactment of a ritual previously attempted
by SPI. Master Wilson prepared the offerings and invited the
spirits to accept the offerings. We then withdrew to observe
the outcome.
After a short time, Master Wilson directed observers to focus
their attention (sort of Northwards) as he said that the spirits
were arriving. While most of the participants were focusing
their attention as directed, I noticed Kelvin walking off
and glancing towards the side (NE). Later he confirmed that
he had seen more spirits nearer. He offered to attempt to
capture an image for me on my camera.
We remained as we were, until we observed that the waters
were rising fairly rapidly. For the safety of the group, we
decided to return to base camp rather than wait to see how
far the waters rose. Master Wilson explained that the spirits
wanted to come up to accept our offerings but possibly were
not able to as we were crowding the area.
Back at base camp, a third experiment - food tasting - was
swiftly conducted. Participants were asked to sample muffins
- blind to which were offered and which were not offered,
to see if there was a difference in the taste. (I suspect
I messed this one up for them as I was asked to resample the
muffins - Kenny, Desmond: what were the findings like?)

While everybody was
focusing on the waterway and the tide that came straight to
the offering, Kelvin somehow looked aside
He said that more spirits are actually coming from the side
way, through the dark swampy forest

Carol followed Kelvin
ti the side-way; taken down these photos ... Can see that
they are coming?
These are not the smoke from the offering as the burning was
from behind us already ... spooky mist..

The spooky mist somehow
just materialized ... Kelvin said "many of them, came
from the swamp behind us"
I took this photo, the last one .. there is an ugly deformed
face in the orb. What do you think it is? View here.
Investigation Night with Spiritual Masters, 30th August
This event was a joint effort between Fengshan Jade RC and
SPI. The spiritual masters conducting the offerings were from
Fengshan Jade RC, while main operations and itinerary was
set by SPI.
The first stop was Kranji Deadly Reservoir, reported site
of first attack by the Japanese soldiers when they invaded
Singapore (information supplied by Brushup, again the host
on our bus - Kelvin being the guide for the other bus). This
was also to be the site of the first experiment.
After selecting an appropriately dark location, the spiritual
masters first made offerings to the spirits while Kelvin set
the scenario for the first experiment which required participation
from one female and four male volunteers. The males were required
to each face a specific compass point (N, S, E, W), with the
female in the middle.

The crowd is gathered
at Kranji deadly reservoir - it was named so because it used
to be a WW2 battlefield
Kelvin was setting up the ritual experiment. Notice the third
photo - there is a large orb seems to attach on a female member's
leg. View here.

The
ritual experiment was in progress. Master Stella was telling
the crowd to stay away for avoiding disturbance.
Again, look carefully at the female SPI Agent in the center
of the first photo - two orbs started to attach on her. View
here.
When the crowd stepped back, more orbs were observed at the
ritual experiment site.

Orbs were observed
everywhere during the ritual experiment
Not only that, our femaile agent is later checked with the
following photo that the two orbs seem to be following her.
View here.
The volunteers
were briefed by Kelvin to maintain their flames - their role
was mainly to chant a set of phrases while doing so. Unknown
to the participants, disgruntled spirits who sought to escape
their situation were expected to be fighting for control of
the flames, should the spirits win, they would then trade
places with the participants, aka getting them possessed!
We remained at this location for around an hour observing
and taking photos before moving on to our second location,
Death Cliffs.
On a later date, we asked our female agent on what she felt.
Below she described:
At the starting of the experiment,I
do feel something on my right side. I dismissed it because
I didn't know it was something to do with the paranormal.
And during the experiment,i saw two white apparitions on my
right side (she didn't know about the photo with 2 orbs lingering
around her when she told about this!!!), near the beach there.
I'm not sure if the rest saw. Again,I dismissed it,thinking
it could be an illusion or so,something. And I heard a siren, could
be a passing boat from the sea. Kelvin said that he heard
a siren from the sea too,so i guess it could be wrong. There
shouldn't be anything else already,i guess. Just to add on
at the kranji reservoir experiment, i did felt goose bumps
twice,it doesn't feel like the kind of wind that blow through
me or something.

During the ritual,
the spirits supposed to come and fight for the control of
the candle flames. So to our cultural belief in general, spirits
or ghosts usually would ride in a form of wind, making our
hairs stand. For the girl who experienced subtle wind blowing
to her, it is the arrival of the spirits.

We feel winds
because the air around us moves. Wind is basically defined
as movement of air - our human skin is sensitive to even the
slightest movement of wind. For example, when we fan ourselves,
we make the air move and it is felt as wind. Our female agent
claimed that there is no wind blowing from the sea that blows
through her, but she sensed "wind" giving her goose-bumps
The wind is produced by the candles put around her sitting
position. As the warmer air rises and expands when the candle
is burning, the density and pressure of the air below decrease.
The surrounding cooler air flows in to fill the void and wind
develops.
This process is subtle and takes time by the candles to build
up small pockets of wind around the girl. The wind is less
apparent than the natural wind from the environment - still
it can be felt well to the extent of having goose-bumps, especially
when the girl was closing her eyes - concentrate on her senses
in the attempt of feeling the presence of a "ghost".
There are a total of 9 candles surrounding the girl. And she
was wearing a short skirt with the laps covered but other
areas of the skins exposed - sensitive to feeling temperature
change.
With such wishful thinking, the slight amount wind caused
by the candles would very likely be interpreted as "ghost"
wind, in this case.

Air flow built up around the
participants without them knowing
Death Cliff -
This place is near the Ministry Of Education Dairy Farm campsite
and is reputed to be highly haunted. Deaths have occurred
during rock climbing expeditions which could be from carelessness
or loss of concentration; however, this does not stop more
colourful interpretations explaining death.
As we walked at the base of the rock climbing faces, we could
feel the cool clear air around us (cool clear air, soon to
be polluted by smoke). As the group was large, we separated
into two groups where Brushup and Christine showed one group
the cliff face and introduced the history of the area. Brushup
offered to show our group in particular one area where a climber
was known to have fallen to death, an offer which was taken
up by many.

SPI members are gingerly
checking on the infamous Death Cliff. In the last photo, a
girl was astonished (!!) what made her frightened like this?

Look
at what is in the green circle? Can get enough? View
here.
During this time,
the spiritual masters were pacing the grass area with their
devices and observed instability in the magnetic field strongest
at one location, hence prepared to make offerings at that
spot to appease the spirits there. The two groups were then
called together for instruction by the spiritual masters on
how they used their equipment and their practices. We remained
at the site for about forty-five minutes to absorb the environment,
during which time the air was no longer fresh smelling, as
the smoke from the offerings and the many cigarettes were
polluting it.

1. Master Stanley and
Master Stella were briefing the participants. 2 & 3 Princess
Delfi and her prince dear;
4. Orbs?

Orbs?
Smoke? Dust? Mist? Water vapour? Whatever they are, the amount
was exceptionally huge right at the Death Cliff area....
Death Cliffs was
followed by a supper break after which we proceeded to Devil's
Bend, another site where death was said to occur. During the
late 1960s and early 1970s, a stretch of Old Upper Thomson
Road was used for racing. This sport was rumoured to discontinue
after many deaths occurred there. As usual, we stopped to
make offerings to the spirits and take pictures. We were not
keen to stay too long here as the drive to Old Changi Hospital
(OCH) would take about half an hour, and we still had Bukit
Brown to go to before OCH. Thanks to Fengshan Jade RC who
has applied a permit of entry to OCH for us. We were running
late.

Masters conducting
road side offering at Devil's Bend, appeasing the souls died
of road accidents
Look carefully at the second photo ~ an orb with a tail seems
to be shooting up to the sky. View here.

Common
sense tells us that burning offering gives out a lot of ash
and smoke. So are the orbs just reflection of debrits in air?
Look carefully in the second photo. There is a series of purpose
color orbs that look extraordinary. View here.

Orbs
are just reflection of dust in air, may be. Look at the second
and third photos that have a green circle on.
There seems to be a cartoon like creature probing out its
head, arising from ground, to see what is going on.
Are these just random pixels that form a monster? View here
for the enlarged photo of the monster.
The two photos taken at different time and slightly different
angles show that the creature is stationary.
Happy
participants, laughing out loud. Can you see anything unusal?s
At Bukit Brown
we walked to the tomb of Lim Chong Pang, spiritual masters
again made offerings. Due to the fact that we were behind
schedule, we did not stop by the haunted well and instead
started off to OCH. We arrived at OCH around 5am. The spiritual
masters who had arrived earlier by private car had already
started the offerings thus we did not need to stand around
too long waiting. Justin took a temperature reading before
we entered the gates then we lugged the SPI gadgets and equipment
up to the second floor where Kelvin proceeded to set up for
the second experiment.
The spiritual masters insisted that we did not crowd around
observing hence many of us wandered around the old building
in small groups, mindful of safety the building was in bad
repair. Angela, Koolad, my daughter and I had a good walk
around the second floor, noting that there was one wing where
the tiles were not vandalised or run down as most of the building
was.

Are these just smokes
from burning the offering? If so, look at the weird shape
and movement of the smoke

1.
O rbs are said to dust reflection. In this photo, the image
was out of focus hence the orbs may be reflection bounced
by dust near the camera
2. The offering burning is finished. You can see a spooky
built up of smoke just at 2 feet above ground - doesn't smoke
rise and disperse in air?
3. Spooky tree at Bukit Brown cemetery; 4. Orbs are everywhere
at night at bukit brown cemetery

Spirits
are said to prefer taking shelter at large trees. Check out
if this is true..

From
spooky trees at Bukit Brown cemetery, SPI group moved to Old
Changi Hospital for further experiments
After about an
hour at OCH, we packed up and returned to Fengshan Jade RC,
after which it was bye and hopefully see you again.
I would like to say a big thank you to SPI for organising
the activities. While they were not perfect, it is still an
experience that I am glad to have had the opportunity to experience.
The people of SPI who made it possible definitely made the
experience worth having. Sadly, my daughter could not observe
any paranormal activity, possibly due to the group size -
I am sure any spirits would shy away from such a large group
of people. The opportunity to attempt the journey with Master
Wilson was an eye-opening experience from my point of view.
Thank you, members of SPI who organised/made the experience
more meaningful for my daughter and I: Angela, Brushup, dajie
Christine, uncle Chua, Desmond, Justin, Kelvin, Kenny, Koolad,
Mikemayers, and Yuiiko; and the rest whom I never really had
a chance to get to know by name thou I do remember your faces!
