Pontianak Tree Search
(Source: incident reported by Abductboy’s colleague, K)

K’s brother was fishing at the old commando jetty at Changi Beach with a friend one night. That night, while their fishing rods had been set and they were sitting quietly waiting, they felt some stones being thrown at them. The two of them turned around and seeing no one else around, they asked each other: “Was it you?” No, they were not playing jokes on each other. Then K’s brother walked near a tree to investigate. He thought he saw a figure sitting on a branch. His friend sat where he was. Suddenly he heard a scream, possibly from K’s brother’s direction. He turned around. It was not known exactly what he saw but he fainted nonetheless.

The two avid anglers fainted that night. They were warded into hospital the next morning when a passer-by saw them lying unconscious on the ground.

When it was reported to SPI we were speculating some tree spirit or may be Pontianak were residing in some of those trees at Changi Beach near the old commando jetty.  Be it rumor or true, SPI decided to do a carpet search around that area which is quite untouched.  Nevertheless the story of K was told recently and the incident happened some years back.  It would be quite a challenge to find something as the other stretch of Changi Beach has been under development in the past years.  Under our investigation, it is surprised that there exist quite an untouched part of the water skirt.  And now URA is trying to convert that ulu terrain into a new recreation spot in Changi.  Many existing chalets are packed around that area.  More new chalets will be built to meet the increasing demand too.

Haunted Changi chalet (1)

Let me tell you my account which happened several yrs back in 1992. Together with my relatives, we stayed at one of the chalets at Nethavaron Rd (near OCH) during a school vacation. I was serving NS then.

The first nite was as usual, BBQ and then chit chat till late at nite. When everyone went to sleep, I didn't as I was playing Sega game then. That was a mistake....

At about 3am, I heard a sound from the kitchen which was not in my sight. It was the sound of someone opening one of the drawers. I could distinctly hear the forks and spoons clanging against each other when the drawer closed again. At first, I didn't think much. It was after the sound of the opening and closing of the drawer got louder and more frequent that I realised that something is not right. I dashed into the bedroom and slept. I didn't dare to check it out.

The next morning, when we sat down for breakfast, I was shocked to hear my relatives saying that they could sense people in the room. For e.g., my uncle in one of the rooms, heard the cupboard door being open and close many times. My aunty and cousins (in another room) also heard their cupboard doors opening and closing. They all said that they could feel air movements as if, there were people walking in the room!

We discussed and nobody stayed on after that. We left the chalet. The elders believed that the spirits from OCH could have occupied the chalet when it was not taken. And when people came, 'they' probably wanted us to leave. Well, 'they' succeeded.....

Three of my girlfriends and I booked into a chalet in Changi—this was many years ago and those chalets, the old bungalow types, are not there anymore— and that was when we had the fright of our lives. We aren't superstitious people and since that incident we have tried to explain away what happened, but that night you couldn't blame four teenage girls for being scared to be alone in a chalet in lonely Changi with hardly anyone else around. I remember that we asked the keeper if the place was haunted, because it looked so creepy from the outside. He never made any reply, making it all the more creepier. It made us a bit more sorry that we hadn't invited any boys along to stay with us—this was supposed to be a sort of pyjama party. Anyway, we managed to settle in after a while—no barbecue, we had decided that by consensus—and we were starting to get chatty and beginning to make some noise when one of the girls said she heard the front doorbell ring. From where we were in the living room we could see the porch outside. There was no one there so we thought she must have been mistaken. She too said, yes, we were right, she must have imagined it. We were chatting away again, chewing the cud, rather loudly I might add, when she said, "There it goes again." This time we were all quiet and looking hard at the porch from where we were. There certainly was no one there. We could see the porch clearly Mom where we were. If there were anybody out there ringing the doorbell, we should have been able to see the person for sure. So what could she have heard? Then all of us heard it. Loud and clear. It was the doorbell. One of the girls screamed but we quickly hushed her. Then we heard it again, and again and again, each time getting louder and more insistent as if someone was angry and demanding to be let in. We didn't know what to do. Everybody froze. All our eyes were fixed on the empty porch where the buzzer was. After a little more of the insistent ringing, the bell stopped. Then we heard it. The back door was creaking open. All of us screamed and ran out through the front door. We didn't stop running until we reached the next chalet. We banged on the door, thumping away without caring about anybody, afraid like hell. The man who opened the door was in his pyjamas and he looked a bit nervous. All of us pushed past him and stumbled into the living room. There were four other men there, all of them also like the one who had opened the door. They were seated around the table and they clearly had been gambling. "Uncle, uncle," we cried, explaining what had happened and begging to be allowed to stay in this chalet with them for the night. They looked at each other as if they thought we were mad, but finally one of them said, okay, we could stay. I can tell you, that night we hardly got any sleep. When one of the girls wanted to go to the loo, she forced me to go along and stand guard outside. From where I was, I could hear her singing Amazing Grace to give herself courage while doing her business.

These houses are for rental. Mostly families wanting a break by the sea will rent them. However, a few unlucky ones would return home with a scare! Most people reported a feeling of being stared at. Few unlucky ones were slapped by unknown forces while bathing. Few had heard scary noises at night like the crying of a lady. Witnesses say that the door of the old houses creaked while opening and closing without stopping. Some cases even involved possession of body by a ghost and the sighting of a ghost. The mystery cannot be solved.

Pictorial Tour

1. On one hot and sweaty night SPI set off to explore the humoredly haunted commando jetty near Changi beach
2. The water skirt that we explore is on the other side of the beach that are not so frequently visited by the public.
We had to trek pass a yacht club and several chalets before we can get there
3 & 4. After 15 minutes of slipping thru the chalets and clubs we finally reach the water front

Along the yacht club there was some built up area on which there are some weird looking trees.

1. Walked a little further we passed the yacht club; what lay ahead is a stretch of untamed beach covered in darkness.
2. With a deep breath, we slowly walked ahead.  Another weird tree is found in the water.  Would it be the rumored Pontianak tree?
Not likely, according to the witness the tree was in the forest behind the waterfront.  And it should be near the commando jetty.
3. We have not reached the jetty yet, have we? Felt that we had to pass this turn with is blocked by a big rock.
4. Not only there is a big rock on shore, a few feet out in the water there is another big rock.  What are the markings of the rock?

1. It was never an easy walk on this jagged shore. Suddenly, a cold breeze swept us, a whining noise from our EMF detector sounded..
A SPI member tripped and fell.  Shortly after that his team mate shot this photo ahead.
We felt that something had tried to prevent us from moving forward.  Fear arose on the back of everyone's neck.
(Compare this photo and the 3rd photo from the above row - the orb roamed around the turning of the beach)
2. We realized the danger ahead.  We looked left to the mainland hoping to find a safer detour; we saw a wild forest.
3. However our bravest SPI scout KC determined to take the 1st step, crossing over the turning point.  We stood behind observing..
See if KC is still alright for a while.. just in case he got possessed or behave strangely out of his character.
4. Later on, he yelled 'It's clear, lets move..'  We then continued trekking through this rocky turning point.
After we passed the 'rock' we knew that the commando jetty should not be far ahead.

1. After we passed the rocky turn, the beach became straight and smooth. Suddenly, SPI Gate paused his pace and mumbled to himself
'Oh shit..', everybody walking behind him stopped too. We knew he wasn't joking. Gate just stood still and kept staring straight ahead.
He tried raised his hand slowly while watching ahead, ready to signal us to escape.  Some minutes later, he relaxed down and sighed..
'Gee we are lucky..' Puzzled we were, questioned what he meant.  He tiredly replied, 'nothing, just stay close and stay away from the left'
Sweat like water beads on his face were flowing down.
2. On our left, there were wild forests, spooky and dark..
3. After walking several yards ahead, we finally saw the jetty - Hurray!  4. Near the shore we saw some rusted ship wreck in the water.

1. At about where the ship wreck was, looked to the left we saw a pile of junk - that is where Gate warned us to stay away too;
2. We sensed very fishy here, with our camera we took pictures around - my God, we got an unusual orb that look like a spinning bulb.
3. Not forgetting our mission we were here to check the rumored Pontinanak tree at the commando jetty.  So far we didn't see big trees.
4. Furthermore this is almost as far as we can safely reach within the jetty.  We saw a police patrol boat cruising in the sea.
We didn't want to catch too much attention from the patrol boat by exposing ourselves too close to the jetty.
We estimated if the witness was fishing along this area up behind the slope the Pontinanak trees may be there.  Led by KC, we climbed up.

This is the stone case we used to climb up. Once we were up we found ourselves in some thick forest blocking off all the moon light

Soon we found ourselves entered into some terrain that is under some kind of construction.
We followed the path walking deep into the forest

The forest was pitch dark. SPI members were doing several things simultaneously:
looking for our way, taking photos, and staying away from dangers

Finally we found a pair of unique tall trees that we supposed they are the Pontianak trees in our witness's account.
We observed the trees for about an hour - nothing strange has found from them yet.  Some suggested to climb up.
However, a member suddenly fainted on the ground.  We didn't know what happened except he said having headache and dizzy.
He seemed to have a fever and we immediately sent him home.  Next day a polyclinic doctor said that he has got a flu attack.
But looking at the last photo that he took before he fell sick, we got to think again.

At the end we found this sign board by URA.  They are building a proposed boardwalk for the western coastline.
We wonder if the old commando jetty will be demolished, the coast will or will not be haunted anymore...
