What is Cryptozoology?

First of all, you may wonder, what is "Cryptozoology"? To quote from fellow SPI Elite member, Mathwizard :

Simply put, cryptozoology is literally the study of hidden animals, i.e. unknown animals like Bigfoot, Nessie, Mokele-mbembe etc. But it also includes out-of-place animals, i.e. animal sightings which occur where no such animal is supposed to exist, e.g. black panther or other great cats in Britain. It also includes the study of animals that supposedly already extinct but still very much alive, e.g. the coelacanth.

Before we go on a journey to learn more about these mysterious creatures that may exist among us, please do take some time to read the following thread to get an idea what cryptozoology is about :

Fascinated with mysterious creatures such as Mothman, Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster, New Jersey Devil... etc, & is trying to understand more about them? Then you are about to undertake cryptozoology - a study of creatures / animals whose existence has not be substantiated, or lack of solid proof for its existence to be acknowledged by science, especially zoology.

So are these creatures managed to stay hidden, despite our state of art monitoring technology? Take this fact for example : as of now, about 250,000 plant species, 750,000 insect species and 280,000 other animals are being discovered. However, these figures do not represent all of the species on out planet. Scientists have documented maybe 10 or 20 percent of living things, and new species are discovered all the time.

On average, a new species of large mammal is found every three years, and a new large vertebrate is found in the open ocean every five years. And while scientists are hard at work cataloguing some 300 new species every day, the life cycle details of only a tiny fraction of those we have identified are known. Even better is, human beings itself is not being fully understood.

Based on above, we can safely assume that the creatures we heard so much from stories & legends may exist in reality, waiting for us to discover. But what make these creatures so fascinating that they, according to legends, possess incredible abilities or physical attributes, should have no problem overtaking human beings as dominant species of the planet. So what went wrong? Why do these creatures chose to remain hidden, where they can easily overcome us?

The burning question, perhaps, is do they exist in the first place?

Besides the usual facts / info gathered from the medias, you folks are welcomed to contribute your ideas & theories about these creatures. Now, remember that nothing is absolute in this world, therefore almost anything is possible. I urge everyone to be open minded to new concepts, but at the same time practice some critical thinking, so as to ensure the logic & rationale are not compromised in pursuing of knowledge.
