The July Month Hungry Ghost Special 2002

This holiday is celebrated by both Buddhists and Taoists in China and Chinese communities in worldwide.  During the seventh month of the lunar year, the gates of Hell open, and ghosts return to earth for a visit with their descendents.  Most ghosts are friendly, although those who do not have any living relatives, or died angry at their family, may cause trouble.  The ghosts are entertained with loud music and appeased with offerings of fake paper money, TVs, hand phones, furniture and other items which are burned at shrines.  On the 15th day of the month (which falls on September 2nd in 2001), a huge feast is prepared for the ghosts and chants are said for the dead.  Following dinner, the ghosts return to Hell until their vacation next year.
