Summary of events - 07 Dec ‘03

Weather – Drizzle & occasional heavy shower
Elites present – Kenny, Abductboy, [G]ate, ET, Ah Toh.

5.15pm	SPI elites & club member Entendez arrived at tent opposite 75, Jalan Dusun.
5.15 – 6.15pm	Photo-taking of the tent set up (see the floor plan) & its surrounding. Video interviews with assistant (Brother with Hepatitis B), Vice-president of the sect (Details of the event, sect members/devotees) & Master Roland (about being Tang-ki).
6.16 – 6.49pm	Abductboy, [G]ate & ET fetched the rest of the club members, while Kenny, Entendez & Ah Toh set up chairs & tables for the club members
6.50 pm	Arrival of club members.
6.50 – 7.15pm	Ah Toh conducted briefing to club members, followed by an impromptu tour of the tent. Most people were interested in the 'Hell' section of the tent. The hell room was decorated with fluorescent stick-on pictures of demons, ghouls and hell ambiences. It has no lighting, except some florescent tube like those you find from a disco. So with an overall dark backdrop, the fluroscent ghoulish figures glow in the dark. The atmosphere was quite eerie. At the center was a very scary statute of a Hell deity - HeiWuChang that has an altar with candles and joss-stick urn in front of him. Another spooky sight is on the floor that has two mats lay open. At the top of each mat stood an opened Chinese oil-paper umbrella. There were pillows, slippers, toothbrush and a cup and a towel placed on the mats. Master Rolland said these mats are for the deities to come and rest before the show started. We were warned to be careful and not to step on the mats!
7.30 – 8.00pm	Abductboy conducted a demonstration on IR camera & EMP meter, followed by setting up a monitoring station at room for Hell deities
8.25pm	First trance began. Tang-ki - male. Location – room for Hell deities A scary incident: SPI elite team was monitoring atmospheric changes during the trance. The Tang-ki was already possessed by the hell deity, with his head down murmuring to himself. Many club members were watching him in a circle surrounding him. Over the shoulders, ET pointed his IR thermal scanner on the Tang-ki trying to remotely take his temperature behind the crowd. The infra-red signal is not invisible to human eyes, and usually a normal human would not be able to know if he was taken temperature by a thermal scanner. You can do a simple experiment, try point a TV remote controller towards your body and see if you will feel anything (of course, nothing!). But suddenly, the Tang-ki turned his head to ET's direction and shouted in dialect: 'You back off, clear me the way'. We were all shocked! Is this a coincidence or a Tang-ki when possessed by a deity will have extra senses (even infra-red)?!
8.45pm	Second trance began. Tang-ki – male. Location – South altar (founding deities).
9.45 – 10.30pm	Demonstrations using sword, saw & chopsticks. A total of 13 males & 2 females volunteered for the demonstrations. Such are very dangerous acts that SPI warn anyone of never attempting it yourself. The master offered joss-sticks in group, chanted out some sacred words, then it was believed the deity has given them the power to perform these miracle acts. The idea we suppose is to show the power of the deity through the spirit-mediums tang-ki such that their bodies and their participants' bodies would be protected by the magical power. Each demonstration was very thrilling. If any accident happens, that would be surely fatal. Intestines will be spilled out, arms will be saw off and throats will be stabbed by chopsticks. The following is the sequence of demonstration:- 1) male – 3 chops by sword at abdomen 2) male – sword thrust to abdomen 3) male – 3 chops by sword at abdomen 4) female – sawing on both arms 5) male – 3 chops by sword at abdomen 6) male – sword thrust to abdomen 7) male – 2 chops at lower back 8) Ah Toh – 3 chops at abdomen 9) [G]ate – sawing on both arms 10) female – sawing on both arms 11) club member Lord Weaver – male – sword thrust to abdomen 12) male – sword thrust to abdomen 13) male – 3 chops at abdomen 14) male – breaking chopstick using throat 15) male – breaking chopstick using throat
10.30pm	Third trance began. Tang-ki – male. Location – sect members’ resting area The possessing process is quite drastic. First he appeared dreamy, then drowsy with his eyes looked up. Then his whole body started losing control. He fell on the floor, jumping and crushing his limbs on the floor, sometimes banging his head on the floor. After a few minutes of 'struggle', he started behaving alike the patterns of a deity and uttering words with strange accent. He requested the assistant to put on the deity's costume clothing. Then while he was possessed, he offered joss-sticks to both altars. Eventually he sat down at the south altar and wrote charm-papers.
10.35pm	Fourth trance began. Tang-ki – female. Location – sect members’ resting area For the female Tang-ki, she performed some acrobat acts like bending her body to some incredible extent. And she offered Chinese tea on the floor. When she started getting possessed, similarly, she shock and twisted her body violently, lapped and bumped on the floor uncontrollably for some minutes. The assistants would actually have to hold her down in order to prevent injury.
11.30pm	SPI departed the tent for home.

1. Rows of giant candles lining up, getting ready for the Tangki night;
2. The host of this event belongs to a Taoist, Mao Shan sect called Ong Siong Tong (Sam Kar Lau Chor Shih), Taoism Religious Society
3. There are 2 main altars: this one is for Jade Emperor and the four heavenly kings
4. The other one is for the 3 teacher deities that this religious group is based on; SPI Ah Toh was busy taking pictures

1. Before they started the event, they burnt paper offerings at the perimeters of the tent that is believed to keep off wandering evil spirits
2. A large helium balloon is launched to the sky. We were told that the balloon serves as a beacon for the deities to descent from heaven
3. The balloon is floating in mid-air above the ritual venue; Once the balloon off to the sky, strange thing happened...
4. The weather suddenly changed, clouds thickened and it was about to rain. Another view.

1. The rain poured down, the surrounding spiritual energy intensified;
2 & 3. This path of rain that looks like 'dark water' was flowing quickly towards Entendez!
4. Ah Toh, just behind the table was posing his victory gesture "Yes, it rains!"

1. The little kid asked "Ge Ge, what is SPI ar?" ET lamely answered, "we are the matha chasing UFO, aliens, fairies..."
2. The man in grey shirt is Master Rolland who is the chief Master and the founder of Ong Siong Tong; the man in white is his disciple
3. Rolland was happily sharing his experiences and knowledge on Tangki and Taoism
4. These are candle jars wish-makers adopted by the public. The red shelve would be filled up in the following nights

1. A hell room is made at a corner of the tent that is one of the attractions to the people
2-3. The deity at the center is called Hell Deity, or nickname 'Big brother'
There are 3 of them, a second bother as presented by a copper statue on the left of the altar table, and the youngest one under the altar
We were told that the Hell Deity although is made of paper, it used to be placed under a makeshift hut in Ponggol beach
it can survive the rain for so many years. It is said to be spiritually alive. Click here for a close up.

1. The youngest brother deity carrying a white funeral lantern is placed under the altar table;
2. The deceased who are related to this hell deity got their altar tablet put between the urn the hell deity
3. At the corner a table is packed with many thingamabobs: lots of joss-sticks, joss-papers, cigarette smoker, fan, wine and metal chain (!!)
4. Also there is a fashan

, notice its handle is craved in a green snake. It is used to whip open the way to hell by the spirit-medium

1. Notice that at the corner of the table, there was cigarette and alcohol. This evil spirit loves smoking and drinking
2 & 3. These mats look normal, but they are said to be used for the three hell deities to rest.
Amenity includes an umbrella (they afraid of light?), face towel, toothbrush and slippers. The tangki warned us DON'T step on the mat
They said the hell deities have already ascended from hell and should be here already, that gave us Goosebumps
4. This pair of robes, obviously, are for HaiWuChang and BaiWuChang

This is a set of freaky photo on the hell deities taken with special lens. Some complained sick after downloading them... You are warned.

At about 7pm, SPI club members were being fetched by complimentary transport from Novena MRT station to the Tangki site;
1 & 2. Ah Toh was briefing the club members about the Tangki night events and the orientation of the site
3 & 4. With a great honor, we have the opportunity to meet a reputable Taoist Master Robert T. K. Bin. Here is another view.
Master Robert is the founder of Penang Yi Ching Taoism Association. He humbly shared much of his experiences and knowledge with us

1. Super Ah Toh! 2. Ah Toh showed club members around the place; 3. Perhaps the most intriguing place to visit is the hell room
4. Not forgetting our SPI mission, Ah Toh and ET were doing monitoring and measuring the atmosphere outside the hell room

At about 8pm, SPI conducted an orb observation experiment coordinated with the tangki.
They prayed to the heaven deities for allowing the deities that supposed to come down and possess the tangkis.
After which, we monitored the nearby environment trying to see if any weird occurrence took place..
The following set of photos is amazing. They are taken with the same camera in sequence.
As you can see, the orbs that appeared in the following photos circle near and around the beckoning balloon.

This is the last photo. It shows the orb seemed to be tailing the balloon
Did the deities' spirits come down from heaven as orbs? Or the orbs are residues of spirits passing by as some theory believes?

1 & 2. The tangkis felt that the 'presence' of the deities spirits are there already;
Led by Master Rolland who were holding 3 large joss-sticks, they prayed for signifying the start of the tangki performance
3 & 4. Gate and Entendez were impressed by the dragon chair and the tangki robes. Close-ups of the dragon chair and the robes.

1. This solitaire flag symbolizes commanding power
The holder of this flag is believed to be able to order the spiritual beings from the other realm to do anything under his command
3. Red ink and seals would be used by the tangki to write talisman when possessed; 4. A generous supply of joss-sticks
4. On the altars, there are two Fashan (method cods) with the handles carved in dragon heads that carry magical power

1. We found a saw on the altar! Goodness me, how are they going to use this?
When they noticed that we eyed on the saw, Rolland cheerfully picked it up and told us that is a new saw.
To demonstrate it is a 'real' saw, he grinned and saw apart a wooden rod in front of us. (Remind us of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!)
2. Beside the saw, we found the ultimate lethal weapon - the tangki sword. Gate tried to touch it and got his finger slit
3. With a careful look, the blade is sharp like a paper-cutter. Later we tried to drop an apple on it, the apple immediately sliced into halves
4. And they think it is still not sharp enough (crazy!). A smith is called to further sharpen the sword.
After which, Rolland demonstrated how this large sword can be used to cut open a thick stack of joss-papers that even the sharpest
paper-cutters could not do as well

The Game of Death
(WARNING: If you are under 18, please exit from here and do not continue because of the violence of the photos in nature)

1. This is the most thrilling investigation at the death boundary that we ever had. Master Rolland was chanting a spell on the body
2. When the spell is chanted, it was believed that the deity spirit gave power to protect the body of blood-and-flesh
3. Here comes the deadly action: "Chop, Chop, Chop"
4. Miraculously, the volunteer survived the 3 heavy impacts of throwing an extremely sharp blade on his abdomen.

1. We can't believe our eyes, this is SPI Ah Toh !! and he is going full monty. Want to see his smooth silky back? Click here.
2 & 3. Master Rolland took no chances, he made sure the volunteer under the trial of blade would be protected by a magic spell
4. We have capture a spirit orb while Master Rolland was writing a talisman on Ah Toh's back
Did Ah Toh survive the chop? You will see it in the following report

1. This is our another brave SPI member called LordWaver. He participated in a more deadly magical performance - tummy piercing
2. The assistants have to hold him still because in a minute later, Master Roland will run a distance and strike the sword into his body
Make sure you watch the video clip, not to miss this magical moment of how divine power shielded him from the sword hit
3. SPI Gate also participated. His one is letting Master Roland to saw his both arms. The video clip shows the whole process
We witnessed about 15 minutes ago how sharp the saw was, cutting a solid wood stick into two pieces
Amazingly Gate's arms didn't get saw off despite Master Rolland was sawing hard
His arms ended up with swollen skin scratches and outer skin bleed. Have a look at the close-up here.
4. Rolland showed his magical healing power. After a short chanting, the wound almost healed up

1 & 2. The terrifying acts didn't stop here. Another tangki suddenly pulled up a bunch of burning joss-sticks from the urn
He then used them to burn his body, but incredibly he remained unharmed
3 & 4. On the other side, came another self-mutilation act - in fact, this is a suicidal stunt! Please don't imitate it yourself
The tangkis pointed a wooden chopstick at his throat and use a hand to slap break it
We tested the chopsticks, they are solid and sturdy

1. The broken chopsticks are scattered on the floor
2. At the end of the show, everybody was trying to take a glimpse on the wound
Under such impact of chopping and probing, you would expect to see belly cut open and intestines spilling everywhere
But miraculously nobody was injured, they only left with slight red marks on their skins
Does divine power really exist via these tangki? We have eye-witnessed that

1. Suddenly somebody tapped my shoulder from behind and said "look over there, they are coming..."
A tangki started having contact with the deity spirit. Firstly he/she would struggle on the floor, sometimes they hopped, they banged.
2. You see how the female tangki twisted and strained her muscle while being possessed
3. She couldn't speak properly. Her intention was expressed by body languages.
The assistants beside her were trying to understand what she (actually the deity) wants
4. The deity wanted to grab a bunch of joss-sticks

The tangki put on her costume robe, then started exhibiting the trails of the deity that possessed her. See the deity statue.

This tangki is being possessed by the main deity called 'Jing Yean' that is actually his birthday being celebrated in this festival
After a bowl of rice wine, the tangki wrote a spell on the commanding flag, then chopped with a seal signifying its efficaciousness

After cleansing his feet with a charm-paper, the tangki suddenly wanted to do something drastic
He carried the commander flag, ran quickly to the street, raised up the flag, pointed to the beckoning balloon in the sky
and mourned in a language that nobody can understand
