The ritual of “Leading the Soul across the Bridge” is a
yellow-register ritual procedure frequently performed by
Shanghai Taoists of the Orthodox Unity school. It is usually
performed on the 21st, 35th or 49th day after the death, and
its aim is to pray that the soul of the dead be enabled to
cross the Bridge of Sighs in peace, mount the Bridge of Gold
and the Bridge of Silver (commonly called the “Bridges of
the Immortals”), and eventually reach the Hall of Heaven.
The ritual is seen as emergency aid offered by surviving
relatives to the soul of the departed, who has fallen into
the pit of hell. They hope that the soul of the dead can
avoid being assigned to any place of infernal punishment and
obtain salvation speedily. This ritual was already current
during the Sung dynasty, and it has continued to be
performed and transmitted down to the present day in the
southeast of the Chinese mainland and on Taiwan. The
“Crossing the Bridge” ritual is a good representative of the
ritual as it is performed in the Shanghai region

Amazing Tangki Performance
(WARNING: If you are under 18,
please exit from
here and
do not continue because of the violence of the photos in nature)

The theme of this second tangki
night is about a ritual called 'Crossing the safety bridge'.
Master Rolland and his fellows were busy in setting up the bridge both
physically and spiritually.
The earth god is invited to sit at the end of the bridge that keeps
off evil spirits.

Lion dance and dragon dance were
held celebrating the ceremony. The dances drew immediately everybody's
attention.

At the altar side, one big size
tangki was having 'contacts' with the higher beings. He kneed down on
the ground and became possessed
With a sword, he cut his tongue for obtaining blood to the bowl. The
blood later was used to write charm-papers and talismans

Master Rolland, at about the time,
also got possessed. The deity that seized his body was the chief
Taoist master from the old days

Leading by the Chief Taoist Master
spirit, through Rolland's body, everybody came forward to the heavenly
altar and offered joss-sticks
That was certainly a big crowd of people, many rushed to buy
joss-sticks and joss-papers for showing respects to the heavenly gods
Next to the bridge, a monk started singing and chanting, preparing for
the bridge-crossing ceremony

Master Rolland was being the first
to cross the bridge.
It was believed that after he (actually the deity that possessed him)
crossed the bridge,
the following people who cross the bridge would be blessed

After the bridge crossing ceremony,
the deity left Master Rolland.
He then continued this horrifying chopping act with this new group of
participants
Joss-sticks were used like a pen, Master Rolland scribed some spells
on the sword which was later used to chop and stab people

Look, that is SPI KC under the
trial of blade. Before the deadly act of chopping, Master cast a
protection spell on him from head to belly

Here is another SPI member put down
the deadly show of arm sawing.
She is the ONLY female volunteer brave enough to try the sawing. Both
arms were chanted with a protection spell to ensure safety

This is the clearest picture that
we have captured so far on how the sword poked into the belly.
As shown in the photo the sword actually sank into at least an inch
into the belly. But miraculously no fatal injury occurred

Let us take a close look at the
chopstick breaking act. Against Gate's throat it was bent broken.
How does a fragile human throat sustain the breaking force?

The martial art show pushed the
crowd to the climax

There is a story behind these
photos. But because it is too disturbing, we would have to stop
here... Look at what is in that man's mouth
