Orang Minyak

This is a story that happened in Bedok and told by my neighbourhood friend. Here goes......(story as told by Desmond regarding a paranormal eerie encounter that happened on his friend)

I had a neighbourhood friend who lives just a block away from me. And he believes me that our Bedok neighbourhood is pretty spiritually dirty. We were exchanging stories and opinions on the paranormal when he told me of the story of the legendary malay demon aptly named as Orang Minyak aka the Oily Man. The description of the orang minyak is about a man which skin is black as coal and yet super shiny and oily. It is commonly known in malay village stories that he is the culprit to many bad deeds and that no one can ever catch him at all (and so far hasn't either) as anyone who tries to touch him will ultimately lose grip of him.

Anyway, Desmond related a true life account (as claimed by him or rather, his friend) of an encounter of a friend of his living somewhere in the bedok district with the orang minyak.

"My friend lives in those masionette kind of HDB flats where there the entire unit has 2 levels. His bedroom was on the 2nd floor and on the 1st floor was the living room where his mother usually has her mahjong sessions there with her friends or relatives. There was one fine afternoon when my friend was lying on his bed, day dreaming is time away as usual when he sensed something/one looking at him from the direction of his window. He naturally turned to look and what greeted him would forever til now be a complete nightmare to him. At his winow ledge he saw a very dark skinned man with ultra shiny, as if oily skin peering and grinning at him from his window. The creature had red glowing eyes too. My friend was utterly speechless and in shock but he soon regained composure and found his last energy to run downstairs calling out for his mother. Somehow the shock was too much for my friend that he ended up in a high fever for the next few days.

My friend's grandmother, being taboo and knowing the full story after she interrogated him, consulted a bomoh to do something about her grandson's horrible encounter. According to the bomoh, it seems that the 'thing' that visited her grandson is an orang minyak. And no one was sure how or why it came to him. The bomoh also said that the cure to the boy's shock and sickness goes as far as Sarawak. All he could only provide was that, the answer was there.

My friend's family then traveled to a village in Sarawak as given and instructed by the bomoh. They were greeted hospitably by the local folks and my friend's grandmother asked to pay the village head a visit. Relating her grandson's plight and gathering accounts of the village's history from the head, they were led to a nearby oil well with the answer. According to the village head it seemed, some 10 over yrs ago a foreign worker was working on the oil well when he accidentally slipped and fell into it. As the oil well was strategically placed in a secluded spot of the village, no one heard his cries for help. Determined to cure her grandson, the grandmother forked out her savings to have some men uncover the sealed oil well and search the well too. True enough, after a long search they dug up a skeletal body of a man, apparently suspected to be the late foreign worker.

And immediately, my friend got well after that. So you see, you can't just say that Singapore is spiritually a cleaner place than in Malaysia. Such things do travel to home grounds too...."

Another version of Orang Minyak story by Will Ong:

There are several version of the orang minyak (literally means 'oily man'). During the 1960s, the orang minyak existed around several towns of Malaysia raping young women. They covered their nude body with oil so that it would be difficult for anyone to catch them. Although the orang minyak of the 1960s were definitely human, there were countless stories of the orang minyak that was related to the supernatural as well as black magic. Below is an account of such story contributed by Blue Oyster.

The orang minyak is actually a normal person but he has to rape virgin women to accomplish certain powers of the black arts. He would be nude and covered himself with oil. Anyway, this particular orang minyak I am going to tell you about is the one terrorising a higher education institute in Shah Alam. The story goes like this.......

One night, Minah was studying for her exams with her roommates. As the night fell deeper, Minah decided to turn in for the night and go to bed. She almost fell asleep when she suddenly felt someone on top of her. She opened her eyes and she saw this huge nude man forcing himself on her. He had a very dark complexion and he had strong, deep eyes. Minah tried to scream but no voice came out. She tried to push him off, but she didn't have the strength for he was a big man. He was all over her and she was just helpless. She felt weak and hypnotised. Subsequently, she was raped.

Minah knew her roommates were still in the room but why didn't they come and help? It angered her that her roommates would just sit there while she was being raped by this stranger. After everything was over, Minah finally found strength to cry out loud. Her roommates rush to her bedside and asked her if she was all right. Minah cursed them for not coming to her aid. They were puzzled by her sudden outcry. They calm her down and then asked her what went wrong. Minah was pale and still in a state of shock. Minah then asked them why they did not come to her aid when that man was raping her. All of them went stark white. They never thought that it was the orang minyak's doing. In fact, none of them see the orang minyak. Perhaps the orang minyak has magic powers so that no one will be able to see him or perhaps he is not human after all.

To Minah, it was an experience that will haunt her for the rest of her life. The authorities were not able to capture this orang minyak who terrorised the Institute. The institute's management decided to bring in a bomoh (Malay medium) to 'chase' this orang minyak away.
